What’s Behind the Security Curtain?
Like any business, at times we can get caught up in industry jargon. I thought it might be helpful to take you behind the “security curtain” to explain a few terms and the components that make up the world of home security systems. Enjoy.
Home Unit
The home or base unit is the brains of a home security system. It can be connected to a phone line and will automatically dial out to report information from security system sensors.
Keypad
The keypad is your control over your home security system. You use this to arm and disarm your system. A keypad maybe near the base unit or conveniently located near entryways for easy arming and disarming.
Door and Window Sensors
As part of a home security system, magnetic sensors will be placed on doors and windows. The sensors are connected between the window and the window frame. When the system is armed and this magnetic connection is broken, an alert will be generated.
Motion Sensors
Motion sensors come in different shapes and sizes. The purpose of these sensors is to detect movement. They can be placed in various parts of the inside of a home or business.
PIR Sensors
PIR stands for Passive Infrared. These sensors can detect changes in heat in the area they cover allowing them to function even in the dark.
Other Security Features
Each home will have a customized alarm system developed to meet their family and living situation. These could include smoke detectors connected to an alarm system, panic buttons, heat sensors, video camera, video door intercoms, outdoor security measures and other customizable features.
Wireless Alarm System?
A wireless alarm system work just like a wired system. Instead of wires, the system is operated by radio signals. Wireless makes it easy to install a home security system because there are no wires. Additional components can easily be added. Good wireless systems also use batteries as part of their components because wireless can be run into interference issues. Wireless can be a safer system because it has no wired for a thief to cut or disarm.
What is Central Station Monitoring?
Lloyd Security uses a central station monitoring system. This means that when an alarm is triggers, a call is made to our monitoring office. From there a person will set in motion the proper procedures. If a smoke alarm has gone off, they call the fire department. For other alerts, they may dial the police department or other appropriate agencies. With each family, we establish a procedure to prevent false alarm being reported to emergency agencies.
