In America, there is a home burglary every 15 seconds.  Here are four mistakes that can make your home a target for burglars.

Mistake # 1

Leaving the burglar alarm off when you are running out for only a few minutes.  More than half the time with home burglaries, the alarms aren’t turned on.

Mistake # 2

Hiding your valuables.  Burglars know the bedroom is the most popular place.  They look in underwear drawers, under the mattress, or high on a closet shelf.  Keep money and jewelry you rarely wear in a safe-deposit box.  Hide valuables where burglars don’t look, in the garage or removable ceiling tiles or in the freezer.

Mistake # 3

Getting a big dog.  A 100 pound Rottweiler or German shepherd might look scary, but burglars know better.  Most big breeds unless they are trained as guard dogs, aren’t a barker.  What you want are “yappers.” small dogs that make a lot of noise. Breeds such as Chihuahuas are better deterrents than large dogs.

Mistake #4

Having newspapers and mail delivery stopped when you go away.  You may trust your mail and newspaper carriers, but the fact is that you don’t know who else is getting the information.  So keep your plans quiet.  Have a neighbor or close friend pick up your paper or mail.  Ask them to drop by at different times of the day.  The more activity burglars see, the less likely they are to target your home.
