A friend of mine once described holiday parties as amateur hour. By this, he meant that it is a time when many people who have little experience with drinking, drink too much.  Whether you are hosting a New Year’s party or attending a party, here are some safety tips to make the party fun and safe.

  • Almost 40 percent of all holiday traffic deaths involve alcohol
  • If possible, drivers should stay off the road between midnight and 3 a.m. when drunk driving accidents are most likely to happen.  (U.S. Department of Transportation)
  • Have food with your alcohol.  Drinking on an empty stomach can cause intoxication faster.
  • With an alcoholic punch, use a non-carbonated based like fruit juice.  Alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream faster with a carbonated base.
  • Coffee cannot sober up someone who has had too much to drink.  Only time can do that.
  • Offer plenty of non-alcoholic drinks.  50% of the population is non-drinkers.
  • Have cab numbers on hand instead of people driving home intoxicated.
  • Make sure your car is in good working condition.  Icy roads, cold and snowy weather are a challenge without drinking.  They become a greater challenge when drinking.
  • Stay alert for other drivers who have over-celebrated.
  • Beyond the danger of hurting yourself or others, a DUI has significant financial and legal consequences that last for many years after an episode.

Conclusion for Safe Holiday Celebrations

Be a friend first, then a host.  With a little foresight and by taking precautions, you can enjoy your holiday parties and have plenty of fun.

Happy New Year to you and your families.  Be safe for the New Year.
